QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's University dance team traveled to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida last week to compete in the Universal Dance Association College Nationals. Competing against twenty five other NCAA Division I teams, the Red Storm dance team finished seventh in the nation. The team has been in existence at St. John's University for more than forty years. This is highest the team has finished since 2005, when the squad earned third in the competition, the best in the program's history.
"An outstanding Athletics Program needs to have first-rate support groups to represent it," said Chris Monasch, Director of Athletics. "Our dance team provides excellent support for all of our teams at St. John's, and always achieves great results when competing against its peers in national events. Coach McCarton and her team continue to represent our University in a first-class manner."
Each team competed in two rounds. Teams are judged on the choreography, level of difficulty, dance technique, synchronization and performance of their routine. Only the top 13 teams made it past the semifinal round to participate in the finals. Fourteen dance team members represented St. John's in the competition. The team has participated in the competition four times in the last decade.
"I was very proud of them. They performed very well," said Christine McCarton, St. John's dance coach. "They improved their performance from the semifinal round to the final round and they deservedly finished seventh."
"The routine was outstanding. Their performance at nationals is indicative of all their hard work and dedication," said Senior Associate Athletics Director John Diffley. "The dance team, led by Coach McCarton, continues to be outstanding ambassadors for St. John's University."
